Natural Ventilation

Natural ventilation is an effective solution for open-sided dairy barns located in regions where prevailing winds can provide reliable airflow. By utilizing sidewall curtains and ridge vents, these systems harness natural air movement to exchange fresh air, help regulate temperature, remove excess moisture, and maintain air quality. Natural ventilation offers the lowest capital and energy requirements of any dairy barn ventilation system, relying primarily on natural air movement rather than mechanical exhaust equipment. Where climate conditions are favorable, properly designed natural ventilation systems can provide effective environmental control throughout much of the year while minimizing equipment and operating costs. To further enhance performance, circulation fans can be incorporated into naturally ventilated barns to improve air movement, reduce temperature stratification, and create a more uniform environment that supports cow comfort, health, and overall herd performance.

Tunnel Ventilation

Tunnel ventilation is commonly used when greater environmental control is needed, particularly in regions with prolonged periods of hot weather. High-capacity exhaust fans create a consistent flow of air through the length of the barn, helping maintain steady air movement and cooling conditions. This approach is well suited for facilities where managing temperature and airflow is a priority.

Cross Ventilation

Cross tunnel ventilation is designed for bigger buildings which moves air across the width of the barn creating a high air exchange rate. By shortening the distance air travels, these systems help distribute fresh air uniformly throughout the facility. Cross tunnel ventilation is often selected for large dairy operations seeking consistent ventilation across every section of the barn.
